Clean ability is one of the driving factors in the purchase of  a sofa.  Today we have the benefit of Micro Fibers which are absolutely the most cleanable of all fabric types.  Micro fibers have sealed fibers which will not allow stains to penetrate, so that any spill can be wiped off, even ink if your using a gentle cleaner like Resolve or some other similar spray.  Usually with micro fiber, all that you need is a 100% cotton cloth and a little bit of warm water, just damp to the touch.  That will buff off almost any organic type of stain that you get on the sofa (like salsa, pizza, coffee etc.)  But you have to catch your stains quickly. the faster you get it off, the better chance you have to not leave a shadow on the fabric.  Micro Fibers can be removed from the sofa too and thrown in the washing machine on a gentle cycle with Woolite or a very small amount of detergent.  Don’t use HOT water, and don’t put in other clothes or fabrics with the cover.  Of course, you need to have a couch or sofa that has cushion covers that come off (with zippers…) if you want to wash them.  You can’t put them in the washer with the foam and everything.

FABRIC CODE TYPES

Usually your store will have fabric codes on the fabric swatches.  There are three main types.  I put down the basic cleaning needs for each:

S = Solvent!  This is the least cleanable type.  Some of these fabrics can stain with pure water. You need to have this type of fabric professionally dry cleaned.

SW = Solvent/Water Based Foam!   This fabric you can either dry clean (better) or just be very careful with your cleaning.  You can mix up a little soap and water, and just use the foam off the top and dab it on the fabric.  Go easy!  You don’t want to rub too hard and make a mark.

W = Water Safe! (or Washable)  This is the safest, most cleanable fabric to use.  All micro fibers fall into this category.  Take off the covers and throw them in the wash if you want.  You can also easily clean them in place with some light soap and water, or just plain water.

Just remember to always go easy first and get progressively more aggressive with your cleaning.  With some occasional care your sofa ought to last as long as you want to keep it.

Tufting can turn an average looking sofa model into a great looking sofa.  But there are some important things to understand about tufting.

So what is tufting?!?  Tufting is the use of buttons or simple fabric pulls that give an indentation effect to the fabric.  The fabric is literally pulled in by a thread that is tied onto a button, or tied to a piece of fabric that is sewn onto the sofa fabric, and then gently pulled tight to create the dimpled effect.  Further, decorative cross stitching can be used in conjunction with button or pull tufting to create more of an effect.

The benefits of tufting are mainly esthetic.  However, there is the added benefit of making the back cushions more tailored feeling than normal soft back cushions.  That is because the threads that create the tufting are actually sucking the pillow in, so it doesn’t look so puffy, in other words making it more lean and trim.  That gives the sofa a more tailored look, and also a tighter feel.

The down side to using tufting, especially button tufting, is that people, kids mostly, will have a tendency to want to play with the buttons, and if they rip one off, it can be a pain to get it sewn back on.  That is especially true if it is a tight back sofa where there are no pillows, and the buttons are tied into the frame.  That is a nightmare to fix.

The other issue with using tufting is the cleaning issue.  A lot of sofas these days use micro fibers.  If you can take off the seat and back cushions, you can pull out the stuffing and throw them right in the wash.  But if you have buttons on the sofa you can not take out the stuffing and therefore you can not throw them into the wash.  Your only option then is to have a professional service come to your home and clean the whole sofa in place.  Sofa cleaning is a really good idea on a yearly basis, just to keep the sofa looking and smelling fresh.  Any good sofa store can get tufting added to any model they make with ease.  You just need to figure out if it is a good idea for your lifestyle and décor!

Lots of people buy leather sofas.  If you don’t want to slip and slide around your sofa and stick to it in the summer, but you still like the look of some leather, there is the option of just using some leather to accent a fabric sofa.

We make ½ & ½ sofas on a regular basis in our showroom.  The frame of the sofa is done in 100% leather, and the seat and back cushions is done in a comfortable fabric.  You get the benefit of some leather accent, without the cost of a full leather sofa.  For those of you who are more worried about the look of leather, and not if it actually is leather, can use one of the hundreds of new faux leathers now on the market.  These faux leathers are hard to distinguish from real leather, especially when they are on the frame, where you really don’t touch them much.  It is usually the same price as regular grade fabrics, and you don’t have to use up two-three cows worth of leather.  The cows will really appreciate the change!

Accenting just the face of the arms and perhaps the front rail is another great way to use leather on a couch.  This is a really good one, if the sofa is up against a wall.  Why spend all of that money on leather, and then hide the leather with a wall?!?  If you put the leather on the face of the arms and on the bottom rail in front, it will get a lot of visibility and your total up charge will be very small, because it is not a lot of leather to use.

Leather is a great accent material no matter how you decide to place it on the sofa.  Don’t be afraid to use it in small amount to dress up even the simplest sofa!

I had a client in yesterday that was making a sectional for her Great Dane… I swear to God that is what she is doing. And she is not the first person to do that. I even get people bringing their dogs into my store so the dogs can test sit the sofas too to make sure they like the style and feel.

Anyway, this client wanted to make a small sectional, only about 72″ on the back side and only come out about 72″ off the wall. She also wanted to have it be usable as a pit group, or to be able to pull the pieces apart and use them all individually.

The answer was pretty clear to me… Make a simple sofa, that has arms that can be used as the back of the chair that makes the “chaise” coming off one side. Many sofa styles have arms that have a good pitch to them. In other words, you can lean back against the sofa arm, and it feels like a back. So we make a sofa, or even a smaller “condo” sofa, in this case one that was exactly 72″ in a standard length, then we make a chair with an arm as the back of the chair, so when we butt it up against the sofa arm, it looks like a back continuing around the sofa. The final piece of the puzzle is to make a custom sized ottoman to completely fill in the square of the sectional pit.

That way you can take out the ottoman, move the chair aside and you have seating for 6 people (three on the sofa, one in the chair and two on the big ottoman), or push it all together and you have a great snuggle zone for you & your Great Dane (or a bunch of Yorkies…)!
